The museum was opened to tell the political history of West Berlin and to provide information about the occupation forces.

There are many works, documents and exhibitions about the German people's experiences in the museum.
You can also see things like the British Hasting plane, part of the British-American Spy Tunnel, the French military train restaurant car, and the old Checkpoint Charlie guard lodge.
